Hojalata Altar Frame Workshop: Honor Loved Ones for Dia de Muertos

Register here!

In celebration of Dia de Muertos, participants will create a custom altar frame using the vibrant and intricate art form of Hojalata, or Mexican tin art.

With guidance from Liz Ortiz of Mad Hare Press, you'll learn how to emboss and paint tin to design a unique frame for a photo of a loved one, whether human or pet, who has passed on to the next life.

Dia de Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a significant cultural celebration in Mexican heritage, where altars (ofrendas) are built to honor the deceased. Pictures of loved ones are placed on these altars to welcome their spirits back into the world of the living. In this workshop, you'll have the opportunity to craft a tin frame that can hold a photo of your loved one and can be used as part of an altar for Dia de Muertos.

Participants are encouraged to email a photo of a family member or pet that has passed ahead of the workshop, or bring a printed image for use as a reference. Image size: 2 1/4" x 2 1/4" .
